More than 800 legal experts have called on British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to take immediate action to halt what they describe as a genocide unfolding in the Gaza Strip, according to The Guardian Newspaper.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, the signatories emphasized that the UK, along with all other nations, is "legally obligated to take all possible measures to prevent genocide in Gaza." They urged the British government to employ all available means to secure an "immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire" in the territory.
The legal professionals also stressed the urgent need to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza, and called for economic sanctions on the Israeli government and any individuals found to be complicit in unlawful actions.
The letter further recommended a comprehensive review of the UK’s trade relations with Israel, including the suspension of the joint roadmap agreement. It also demanded the enforcement of arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) concerning the situation in Palestine.
The letter represents one of the most significant legal interventions in the UK related to the Gaza conflict, as international pressure mounts amid growing concerns about the humanitarian crisis in the region.
